Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank recently took a three-year hiatus from the Hollywood spotlight to care for her ailing father.

“It was supposed to be a year, because it takes a year to see if an organ transplant takes,” Swank told in a new interview. “A lung transplant is the most difficult of all, as it’s an incredibly delicate organ. The plan was to take off a year.”

However, one year turned into three years as it became clear to Swank that her father needed her to be a loving daughter in a time of poor physical health.

“I became my dad’s health advocate,” Swank said.  “One year quickly turned into two, and then three. And, thank God, prayers were answered. He is healthy and doing really well five-plus years later.”

Along with her thankfulness to God for answering the prayers, Swank shared how she dealt with the difficulties caring for her father.

“It takes a lot of energy, love, and edifying yourself on the matter at hand. The ups and downs are so challenging and can be overwhelming,” Swank explained. “Make sure that you’re taking time for yourself and that you vocalize what your needs are to the people who are around you so they can help support you.”

Swank resumed her career in entertainment once her father was stable.

Though Swank received Academy Awards for her performances in movies like MILLION DOLLAR BABY and BOYS DON’T CRY, Movieguide® found both of these movies to contain gross immorality, and/or worldview problems.

Swank’s first theatrical movie, THE NEXT KARATE KID, received a -1 from Movieguide®, recommending discretion for older children.

One of her newest projects is the Netflix original series AWAY, which follows Swank as an astronaut on an expedition to Mars.

“Before being an actor, I wanted to be an astronaut. I had such passion for, and respect for, astronauts and people who are exploring something that’s so much bigger than all of us,” she said about the new role.

AWAY hits Netflix on Sept. 4.

In the meantime, please pray for Swank and her father to draw closer to the Lord during this time.
